“Jewish Thinkers in the Modern Age” kicks off at Skokie Valley Agudath Jacob (SVAJ) with a talk at 7 p.m.  by Dr. Ben-Zion Katz on Samuel David Luzzatto –– a “Modern” Orthodox Bible Scholar also known by his Hebrew acronym, Shadal. This discussion series will extend throughout the summer,led by a variety of dynamic speakers who are scholars and experts on important figures in modern Jewish history. Explore a different personality each week! “DNA: Tests, Tools and Tales” is the theme of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois’ one-day conference at Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook. Genetic genealogy experts Lara Diamond and Gil Bardige will be the featured speakers for a two-track schedule—one for beginners and one for more experienced users of genealogical genetic testing. AJEC presents ‘Anti-Semitism in Our Backyard,’ a lecture/discussion about current anti-Semitic attitudes in the United States and the Chicago area and how to respond. Discussion will be led by attorney Michael Rothstein, National Commissioner of the Anti Defamation League and former Chair of the ADL Midwest Board of Directors. The Sweet Singers of Congregation Ezras Israel will present a Program at Lincolnwood Place, 7000 McCormick Blvd., at 7 p.m. Jennie Gardner Spallone will read from her newest book ‘Smashing Castles’ about how a young autistic woman discovered her authentic self.   1. If Rabbi Bronstein thinks the Supreme Court sets tax policy for the country, he should go read a civics book. Doesn’t anybody edit his column?
