American Girl Live is an empowering musical for kids and parents alike. Showing until Sunday at the Broadway Playhouse Theater at Water Tower Place, American Girl Live features strong vocal performances, a compelling script, and themes relative to an audience of all ages.
Uniquely, many actors played the role of their character, and corresponding American Girl Dolls. The show was impressive from a theatrical perspective, and also evoked an extremely positive response from the audience. Juggling, movement and dance, and set/scene tricks helped captivate audience attention and praise. Songs were sung along by audience members and American girl dolls were brought to the show by many in attendance. The set is interactive and immersive, with most of the props being wheeled on and off the stage in sync with corresponding song and dance.
I would recommend the show to anyone and everyone, but especially the entire family. The narrative and humor was straight forward and witty, and most impressively, well received and digestible by the entire audience, regardless of age. Believing in oneself, courage, and teamwork are recurring themes in the performance. Broadway in Chicago aims to provide a Broadway experience, off Broadway, for an affordable price.
