| Daniel Elbaum is the new regional director of the American Jewish Committee. Elbaum, an attorney, previously worked at the Anti-Defamation League where he helped draft the law prohibiting bans on mezuzahs in apartments and condo buildings. He also has served in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. "Effective advocacy starts with a strong and active group of organization members and that is what makes AJC's Chicago office one of the most respected Jewish and human rights groups in the country," Elbaum said.
Allan J. Jacobs of Lake Forest was appointed chairman of the executive of B'nai B'rith International by newly elected President Dennis W. Glick at the organization's recent annual Board of Governors meeting. The chairman of the executive is the number two volunteer leadership position in the international organization.
Chicagoland Jewish High School recently announced that 19 members of the Class of 2010 have been named Illinois State Scholars. The award is given annually based on SAT, ACT and/or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores and class rank at the end of the junior year. The recipients include Max Abecassis, Zach Kamin, Kate Kupferberg, Jaime Levin, Matthew Levin, Jacob Rabinowitz, Aliza Shapiro, Louis Shekhtman, Daniel Eisenberg, Rebecca Silverman, Leo Spornstarr, Ari Eisenstadt, Aviva Schwartz, Samantha Aisen, Talia Stoehr, Brett Riederman, Noa Fleischacker, Nina Kiken and Samuel Simon.
Benjamin Sommer, former director of the Crown Family Center for Jewish Studies at Northwestern University for 14 years, has been awarded the 2009 Jordan Schnitzer Book Award in the area of biblical studies, rabbinics and archaeology for his book "The Bodies of G-d and the World of Ancient Israel." Sommer is a faculty member at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York.
Patricia J. Nisenholz, early childhood specialist at the Jewish Community Center Chicago's Pritzker Center for Jewish Education, was recently installed as the incoming vice president of programming for the National Jewish Early Childhood Network at its annual conference in Washington D.C. |
