| Jewish Americans love to eat. They eat because they are happy, sad, tired, awake, anxious, or relaxed - any excuse will do. But on March 11, Jewish Americans will have a new reason to eat: Israel.
In a novel approach to fundraising, a group of students are planning their third annual America Eats for Israel campaign. Kosher restaurants across the United States and Canada have already registered on www.americaeatsforisrael.org. On the chosen day, each participating restaurant will donate 10% of that day's gross revenue to charity. Restaurateurs believe that more Americans will come out to eat that day in support of the project and everyone is looking forward to a good time. It is a win-win for everyone - restaurants, diners and Israel's needy.
America Eats for Israel was formulated by a group of students who established the non-profit organization. Students in Jewish high schools from across North America collaborate in this national effort to support their fellow Jews living in Israel. In the past, the organization has raised over $50,000 for charity. This year, the charity that will be the recipient of the funds is American Friends of Meir Panim, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing needy Israelis of all backgrounds the tools and services necessary to break out of the cycle of poverty. Programs include after-school centers for children, occupational training for adults, and daily meal programs for children and the elderly.
Chicago area kosher restaurants participating are The Sandwich Club in Skokie, Tein Li Chow in Evanston and DaNali's Cafe in Skokie. |
